Missouri State University recently awarded scholarships to incoming students for the 2008-09 academic year. These students were selected from those who applied based on their ACT (American College Test) scores, standing in graduating class and leadership shown in the community and school activities.

Kimberly Steffen of Spencer was awarded the Board of Governors Scholarship in the amount of $5,952 and the Out of State Fee Waiver in the amount of $5,280.


South Dakota State University's spring commencement was held May 3 in Frost Arena for undergraduate students and graduate students.

A total of 1,457 students completed requirements for graduation including 1,185 undergraduate and 272 graduate students. Among those graduating are: David Booth, Milford, Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Biological Sciences, Joshua Halverson, Sioux Rapids, Bachelor of Science in Family and consumer Sciences, Frank Echtenkamp, Spencer, Master of Science in Graduate School, Sydnee Hinton, Spencer, Master of Science in Graduate School.


Susan DeGroot, formerly of Spencer, was among 281 students earning Bachelor of Arts degrees from Northwestern College, Orange City, Iowa, at commencement exercises on Saturday, May 10.


Iowa Central Community College held its 41st annual commencement exercises May 10 at Hodges Fieldhouse. The following Clay County students received degrees: Robert Tielbur, Spencer, Manufacturing Technology; Whitney Mingus, Spencer, Criminal Justice; and MacKenzie Menke, Spencer, Associate of Arts Degree.


Area students from Buena Vista University named to the Dean's List for the 2008 spring semester include: Catlin Curry, Dickens, Julie Rosacker, Dickens, Alison Buechler, Graettinger, Courtney Jones, Milford, Sandra Smith, Milford, Marlana Tewes, Peterson, Toni Tewes, Peterson, Brett Geelan, Ruthven, Brandon Arndt, Spencer, Cassady Carter, Spencer, Brittany Goede, Spencer, Allison Janssen, Spencer, Katie Kramer, Spencer, Melissa Lynch, Spencer, Stephanie Maurer, Spencer.


Twelve University of Iowa students were recently awarded scholarships given by the university's John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center to students who demonstrate an interest and ability in entrepreneurship. Jay Olberding, Spencer, mechanical engineering, Oldorf Scholarship.


Since 1997, the First Cooperative Association Scholarshp Program has awareded in excess of $85,000 in scholarships to graduating seniors. Caitlin Patten and Greg Hermstad are two of the 14 recipients for 2008. They will both be awarded a $500 scholarship.

Greg Hermstad is the son of Jay and Carol Hermstad and is a graduate of Sioux Central Schools. Greg plans to attend Iowa Lakes Community College and major in Agriculture/Beef Production.

Caitlin Patten is the daughter of Doug and Carol Patten and is a graduate of Sioux Central Schools. Caitlin plans to attend the University of Northern Iowa and major in Elementary Education.


Scott McCord of Spencer, an incoming freshman music ministry major at Northwestern College, has been selected as a UPS Scholar and recipient of a $500 scholarship through the Iowa College Foundation, an organization that raises funds for its 24 member independent colleges in Iowa.


Grinnell College has announced the winners of the Howard R. Bowen Scholarships for incoming students from Iowa. Five recipients are selected annually on the basis of a scholarship examination and an on-campus interview. Bowen Scholars receive $70,000, up to full tuition over four years, depending on financial need. Jon Davis of Spencer, son of Monica Peterson and Gregory Davis, has been named one of the five Bowen scholars. While a student at Spencer High School, Davis participated in band and theater, was an All-State Choir participant and received honorable mention to All-State Speech.


Betsy Brugman of Royal has been named recipient of a $4,500 Agnes and Rhea McCarthy Scholarship from the College of Education at Minnesota State University, Mankato for the 2008-09 academic year. The Agnes and Rhea McCarthy Scholarship is given to a junior and an incoming freshman who has an elementary or secondary major and has demonstrated financial need.
