First Congregational Church to donate playhouse

Friday, May 23, 2008
Currently on the grounds of First Congregational Church of Spencer sits a log-cabin playhouse, located near the entrance to the sanctuary. At the conclusion of the 10:30 a.m. worship service on Sunday, May 25, the entire congregation will gather around the house for a prayer of dedication as the playhouse is destined to become a fixture in the backyard of the Clay county CAASA (Center Against Abuse and Sexual Assault) shelter.

Throughout this school year the high school youth of First Congregational Church have been working on making the playhouse.

"First we had an education phase where the youth visited the shelter so they could enter into a better understanding of what those who find it necessary to seek refuge in the CAASA shelter might feel and experience. Then we moved into the planning phase where the youth brainstormed the type of playhouse they might make. Next we entered into the building phase. Now we anticipate delivering the new playhouse to CAASA so that it can be enjoyed by children of all ages," said Rev. Wendy Van Tassell, co-pastor of First Congregational Church.

The playhouse will be a part of the upcoming Flagfest Parade on June 14, and then it will be situated in its permanent residence in the backyard of the CAASA shelter.
