Open burning within the corporate limits of Spencer is not allowed by ordinance. To dispose of leaves, grass clippings, other lawn waste or any household waste by burning is illegal. You may be subject to a fine.
Other means of disposal are available. You may bag and tag items, which the city will haul away or you may take your lawn waste items only to the designated tree and leaf site located one mile north of the intersection of West 18th Street and 18th Avenue West. Questions may be directed to City Hall at 580-7200 or the Fire Department at 580-7240.
There is a $10 fee charged at the transfer station for any untarped or unsecured loads that enter the facility. This applies to all vehicles that intend to dump household garbage or loose bags of garbage at the facility. This charge will be in addition to any charges for dumping. It will be at the discretion of the transfer station attendant to determine whether a load is not secured or not tarped. Exception to the rule: White goods, large pieces of furniture and electronics do not need to be tarped, but must be secured. Trash cans with lids do not need to be tarped but must have the lid secured in order to keep trash from leaving the container.
The city would also like to encourage the use of tarps and or straps to secure loads going to the tree and grass site. Your cooperation is appreciated.
