Spencer Jaycees plan annual sand box fill
The Spencer Jaycees planned to conduct their annual sand box fill on Saturday, May 10. However, due to the rain on May 10, the sand box fill was postponed to Saturday, May 17. Jaycees volunteers will deliver sand to Spencer residences for children's outdoor sand boxes on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m. and continuing until they have delivered sand to all addresses that placed an order. The price for the first 3 wheelbarrows (or less) of sand is $15 and each additional wheelbarrow is $3. To place an order, individuals are asked to go to the Spencer Jaycees' website at www.spencerjaycees.org. Individuals need to click on the sand box fill order link on the Spencer Jaycees' home page and list their name, address, phone number and the amount of sand they wish to order. The sand box fill link on the website will send a message to the Spencer Jaycees e-mail account. If an individual wants to order sand and does not have access to the website, they can call Dave Staples at 264-8718 to place an order. Please note that no orders will be taken after 7 p.m. tonight.
If individuals that place an order will not be home when the sand is delivered, they are asked to leave payment for the order on their front door with information about where they want the sand to be dumped on their property. Checks should be made payable to the Spencer Jaycees. All proceeds from the sand box fill will go to the Spencer Jaycees pre-school scholarship fund.
Kid's Fish Day
The Upper Great Plains Muskie Club and Spirit Lake Kiwanis will be hosting a Kid's Fish Day from 1-3 p.m., Saturday, May 17, 2008, at the Spirit Lake Hatchery. The event is open to all kids, ages 6 and over. Kids 6-12 need adult supervision. A free afternoon meal of hot dogs, chips and pop is included. Free t-shirts to the first 100 kids registered by 2 p.m. Teaching stations will be set up on the hatchery grounds to present a wide range of fishing principles by area anglers.
Avenue of Flags volunteers
The Avenue of Flags committee is in need of help. It takes a lot of work each year to prepare for Memorial Day. Before the display of flags can get put up, we need to find the over 1,200 pipes that are in the ground that the flags go into. We will start looking for the pipes Thursday, May 22 at Northlawn Cemetery at 6 p.m. After finding the 300 pipes there we will go to Riverside cemetery to look for the over 900 there. If not finished Thursday, we will work again on Friday, May 23 starting at 6 p.m. until done. The more helpers there are the easier it is and the faster it goes for all. All that is needed is a desire to help with this great project. A screw driver is helpful to find the pipe with and if you have one a metal detector is great help too.
