The Pioneers qualified 10 boys in nine different events with Kevin James, Ethan Johnson, Milan Johnson and Ryan Wurtz qualifying in three events apiece. James will run in the 100-meter dash, Milan Johnson qualified individually in both the 800 and 1,600, Wurtz will compete in the 110-meter high hurdles and Dylan Chapman will run in the 400 hurdles. The Okoboji boys also qualified in the 4x100-, 4x800-, distance medley- and shuttle hurdle relays.
The Okoboji girls send five athletes in four events to Des Moines. Kendra Klinetobe, Miley Hunziker, Taylor Poppema and Brandi Demuth qualified in both the 4x100 and 4x200. Demuth will also run in the 200-meter dash, while Amanda Dunn also advanced in the discus.
The Sioux Central boys have five athletes in three events heading to Drake Stadium, including junior Trevor Tiefenthaler, who qualified in three events and turned in the top Class 1A district time in the 400-meter dash. Tiefenthaler, Nate Cowell, Mike Ripke and Will Franzmeier advanced in the 4x400; Tiefenthaler, Ripke, Franzmeier and Scott Patten qualified in the medley relay.
The Sioux Central girls send eight athletes in four events. Sophomore Brooke Scharn qualified for the second straight year, making it to Des Moines in the 100-meter hurdles, the 400 hurdles and the shuttle hurdle relay with Steph Thompson, Caitlin Patten and Rachel Peterson. The hurdle quartet also qualified last season, just missing a trip to the Class 1A finals. Sheena Birdsall, Allie Swanson, Brittny Rebhuhn and Jen Rushton added a fourth event, qualifying in the distance medley.
Clay Central-Everly will have one boy and one girl representing the Mavericks, and both will compete in the field. Junior Laura Brugman has qualified for the third consecutive year in the state high jump. Sophomore Austin Klett advances to state for the first time in his career in the long jump.
