Spencer boys buzz Mohawks 7-3

Tuesday, May 13, 2008
MASON CITY -- It wasn't pretty, but they'll take it.

The Spencer boys soccer team improved to 11-2 Friday, overcoming the odds of playing a man down to beat Mason City 7-3 in a hard-hitting affair.

"It was an ugly game, and it was quite a physical game," said Spencer head coach Ben Macrae. "It became a tough game after Scott Pruitt got sent off after the first 10 minutes."

Spencer and Mason City traded the first four goals of the game to sit in a 2-2 deadlock before the Tigers answered with three straight scores.

"It was just how many could we score in the end," said Macrae. "We wanted to come off with everybody healthy and give a few extra players a run."

Alex Toay and Taylor Chapman recorded Spencer's first two goals; Peter Walvatne gave Spencer a 3-2 just before the end of the first half.

The Tigers went on top 4-2 on a goal from Carson Baethke early in the second half, and Sam Brockshus knocked a penalty kick into the back of the net to make it 5-2.

Toay and Chapman each added one more goal to their night, Toay scoring Spencer's sixth goal and Chapman recording the seventh on Spencer's second penalty kick.

Spencer attempted 17 shots on goal to Mason City's seven. S

"We created a ton of chances, we didn't put away as many as we should have. But scoring seven goals is a good result."
