Tigers add two more to state

Tuesday, May 13, 2008
SPENCER -- The Spencer girls track and field team produced two more state qualifying events when the the final eight best times and distances were released Saturday, adding the 4x400-meter relay and long jumper Brittany Peterson to the mix.

The 4x400 team turned in a third-place finish at the Tigers' Class 3A district event on the campus of Northwestern College in Orange City Friday, but unlike the the boys, the Iowa High School Girls Athletic Union takes only the top two placewinners from each district in Class 3A, giving them a total of 16 automatic qualifiers Friday. The next eight best times and distances in each event when the final numbers are officially tallied Saturday.

Katelyn McDermott, Clare Goeken, Sara Edwardson and Alli Christy clocked a time of 4:14.46 at the district event, good for 21st among the 24 state qualifying teams.

Peterson placed fourth in the district long jump behind three other state qualifiers, including top-seeded Michelle Lund of Sioux City Heelan and fourth-seeded Katie Blum of Storm Lake. Peterson, a first-time track participant this season, posted a jump of 15-8 1/2.

The Iowa Coed State Track and Field meet starts Thursday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
