Cans for "Ketch"

Johnson Elementary School and the Spencer Middle School are collecting pop cans to help defray medical costs for Beth Snow-Ketchum, a teacher at Johnson Elementary School. She has recently been diagnosed with cancer. Her husband, Mick is a wrestling coach and English teacher at Spencer Middle School. Cans are being collected at all schools: Spencer High School, Fairview Elementary, Johnson Elementary, Lincoln Elementary and Spencer Middle School. Please drop off cans from now until May 12 at any of these locations.


Postal Food Drive today

The U.S. Post Office Food Drive will take place today. Residents are encouraged to place bags or boxes of non-perishable items next to their mail boxes for postal workers to collect. The food will go to Upper Des Moines's food pantry.


VFW Sunday Breakfast

The Spencer VFW Sunday Breakfast will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Sunday, May 11. Pancakes, sausage, eggs and drink will be served for a free will donation.


Mother's Day Dinner

A Mother's Day Dinner will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Sunday, May 11 at Spencer Moose Lodge in South Spencer. Ham, mashed potatoes, vegetable, salads and roll will be served. Flowers to the first 50 ladies.


Sheridan Mother's Day House Concert

The Spencer House Concert Series will host the mythic singer/songwriter Cosy Sheridan in a special matinee performance at 3 p.m., Sunday, May 11, at the home of Martin Arthur, 323 E. Fourth St., Spencer. As its name implies, the Spencer House Concert Series presents concerts in the intimate setting of a private living room. Doors will open at 2:30 p.m. There are no tickets to buy, but a donation of $12--$15 per person is suggested, with all proceeds going to the artists. Some snacks and beverages are provided, but guests are encouraged to bring a beverage of their choice and a snack to share.

Women's Check-Up Day set for Monday

Providing women an opportunity to increase awareness of their personal health needs is the goal of the National Women's Health Check-Up Day held Monday, May 12. Locally, Spencer Hospital and Avera Spencer Family Care are hosting a women's check-up event from 4:30-6:30 p.m. at Spencer Hospital.


Milford Blood Drive

The Siouxland Community Blood Bank will be at the Milford Community Building from 1-6 p.m., Monday, May 12.


Clay County Democrats to meet

The Clay County Democrats will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 12, at 419 East Second Street.


Diabetic Support Group

The Diabetic Support Group will meet at 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 13 in the Willow Conference Room at Spencer Family Care Medical Arts Building. Dr. Santella from the North Central Kidney Institute of Sioux Falls will speak on "Diabetes and Renal Disease." Everyone is welcome to attend.


Willie Nelson to play Arnolds Park

Historic Arnolds Park Inc. announced Thursday that a national treasure, Willie Nelson and Family, will be performing on Saturday, July 19 at Preservation Plaza in The Park.

Nelson recently celebrated his 75th birthday and still packs a full tour schedule each year. Tickets will go on sale at 10:30 a.m. on May 23. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. with gates opening at 6 p.m. Tickets are available at www.arnoldspark.com, Arnolds Park Amusement Park ticket booth and all Ticketmaster locations.


Memorial Day Avenue of Flags

Anyone wishing to have a flag dedicated into the Avenue of Flags on Memorial Day needs to get it in before May 15. The only information that is needed to have a flag dedicated are birth and death dates, branch of service and war served. A donation to help pay for the flag and pole are appreciated.

Glow ball golf tournament postponed

The two-person alternate shot glow ball golf tournament at the Spencer Municipal Golf Course has been scheduled for Friday, May 16. Proceeds will be donated to Relay for Life.
