Ehlers, distance medley team break school records

A pair of school records fell and the Sioux Central girls track and field team won its second straight team title Monday, capturing the Laurens-Maraton Invitational championship by 32 points over the meet host Chargers.

The Rebels produced 28 top six place-winners in the meet's 19 events, winning eight event titles en route to a 165-point night.

West Bend-Mallard/Twin River Valley was third with 112 points, Newell-Fonda fourth with 45 and Storm Lake St Mary's was fifth with 23 points.

"I am pleased with our continued progress and how we are really peaking at the right time of the year," said Sioux Central head coach Kendall Rachuy. "It will make districts really interesting as we continue to improve our times."

Brianna Ehlers once stood alongside six other girls as the school record holder in the high jump. Now she stands alone. Ehlers posted a jump of 4-11 in a second-place performance, erasing the previous record of 4-10 that had been set and equaled seven times since 1991. The record had been shared by Ehlers (2006), Brooke Loving ('06), Holly Beacom ('03), Lindsay Bennett ('96), Wendy Brugman ('94), Renee Bodenhammer ('94) and Julie Reno ('91).

The distance medley relay team of Sheena Birdsall, Allie Swanson, Brittny Rebhuhn and Jen Rushton also set a new Sioux Central standard, winning the event with a time of 4:34.9 to break the old mark of 4:36.74 which was set in 2004. Sioux Central graduates Leah Whittenburg, Nicole Scheiber, Rachel Henningson and Briana Scharn had held the record.

Sioux Central produced seven more winning performances, all coming on the track.

Brooke Scharn won both the 100-meter hurdles (15.49) and the 400 hurdles (1:11.5), Rushton won the 1,500 (5:19.22) and the Rebels had four more winning relays including the 4x800, shuttle hurdle, sprint medley and 4x400.

Sioux Central also had four runner-up performances and six third-place efforts.

The Rebels will be back on the track Saturday, looking to qualify for state in their district meet back at Laurens-Marathon.
