Amy Lawson of Spencer is a member of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) for the 2007-2008 school year.

Lawson, a senior majoring in business administration, is a point guard on the women's basketball team.

The goal of SAAC is primarily to foster communication between student athletes and its governance. SAAC members represent the views of their fellow athletes, offer input on conference policies and regulations and provide a link between students and the conference. In addition, SAAC increases positive visibility of student athletes through campus and community service projects.

Teresa Becker, a 2005 graduate of CCE, has received recognition on the National Dean's List for the Fall Semester of the 2007 academic year, consecutively each semester since the fall of 2005. To be named on this list, a student must obtain a 3.500 grade point average on a 4.000 scale and carry at least 12.0 credit hours for the semester.

Teresa, a junior, attends Indiana Wesleyan University, in Marion, Indiana. She is carrying a triple major of Business Administration, Marketing, and Entrepreneurship. She has recently been elected a member of the University's Student Government as Vice-President of Academic Affairs.


Kevin Whalen, son of Randy and Lois Whalen of Dickens, has been accepted into the Arts & Science Program for the Fall 2008 semester at Iowa Lakes Community College.


Chelsey Beddow, a 2004 graduate of Spencer High School has graduated from the University of Iowa in December of 2007 with a double major in Political Science and Philosophy.

The Iowa High School Model United nations (IHSMUN) held its annual spring conference on the University of Northern Iowa campus, Thursday through Saturday, April 17-19. High schools from throughout Iowa and several other states attended the conference, which approximates the United Nations in New York City, but with an abbreviated schedule and list of topics.

The topics that were to be discussed included: "Protection of Children in Armed Conflict," "Water Scarcity and Sanitation," "Transnational Organized Crime," "Star Wars,": The Future of Space Militarization" and "Reforming the UN to Allow for Rapid Responses to International Issues."

UNI students are serving as members of the secretariat-chairs and secretaries for the conference include among others, Jesse Meyer, a senior history major from Spencer, research secretary.


The Northeast Nebraska Teacher Academy (NENYA), a collaboration among Wayne State College, Educational Service Unit #1 and 14 northeast Nebraska school districts, has resulted in classroom experience for over 800 WSC education majors while helping to alleviate the area's substitute teacher shortage. NENTA, now in its eighth year of existence, is the first and only program of its kind in the nation. Among those participating, Tabatha Schilling of Spencer.


Morningside College has awarded Emily Beaton of Spencer, the following Celebration of Excellence awards: Morningside Alumni Grant, Music Grant and President's Scholarship Award.

Beaton has been accepted for admission to Morningside for the fall 2008 semester.

Christy has been accepted for admission to Morningside for the fall 2008 semestser.


Kimberly Steffen has been named recipient of a $20,000 Presidential Scholar Award at Minnesota State University, Mankato for the 2008-2009 academic school year.

This prestigious scholarship of $20,000 ($5,000 per year for four years) is awarded to selected new students based on class rank, ACT scores, recommendations, leadership, personal essay and personal interview.

Students must rank in the top 10 percent of their high school class and have an ACT composite score of 26 or greater, or rank No. 1 in their high school class.

Kimberly is the daughter of Tim and Sheri Steffen of Spencer.
