Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at the First Lutheran Church in Alexandria, Minn., for Leona Cowan, 89, of Alexandria, Minn., formerly of Sioux Rapids.

Interment was held at the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids.

Leona Cowan passed away April 26, 2008, at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, Minn.

Leona Irene (Paeper) Cowan was born on Nov. 14, 1918, in Sac County to Roy and Julia (Carter) Paeper. She married Martin Heidelbauer in 1938 and the couple were blessed with three children: William, Harlan and Janet.

During their lifetime, they managed the Hatchery and Produce in several Iowa communities. They purchased the Sioux Rapids Hatchery and Produce in 1947 and made their home in Sioux Rapids for the next 50 years. In 1961, Leona married James P. Cowan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Julia Paeper; son, William Heidelbauer; and husbands, Martin Heidelbauer and James Cowan.

Leona is survived by her son, Harlan Heidelbauer and wife, Linda of Waukon; daughter, Janet Johnson and husband, Harlan of Alexandria, Minn.; step-daughter, Barbara Briggs and husband, Frank of Mondamen; eight grandchildren, five step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and brother, Robert Paeper and wife, Hazel of Sac City.

Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria.
