Tigers return three varsity regulars

The Spencer girls golf team was represented at the Iowa Girls State Golf Tournament for the third consecutive year in 2007 as both Abby Doorn and Emily Holck advanced to state as individuals, continuing the tradition of excellence the program has seen since head coach Marc Bruning took over in the spring of 2000.

In those eight seasons, Spencer has garnered four Lakes Conference regular season titles and two league tournament titles. The Tigers have added two regular season runner-up finishes, two district titles, two regional titles and three team state appearances.

Emily Andersen
The Tigers posted their best performance at a state meet in 2001, placing fourth in Class 4A, and finished one spot off the mark in 2005 with a fifth-place effort in Class 3A. Spencer also placed eighth in Class 4A in 2002.

"Our expectations have always remained the same," said Bruning. "We expect to compete for a conference title, and we expect to be playing our best golf at the end of the year to give ourselves the best opportunity to advance in the postseason."

The Spencer girls brought home their fourth Lakes Conference championship in eight years in '07, mowing down the competition en route to an undefeated season -- the second of Bruning's tenure.

Emily Holck
The Tigers added the conference tournament championship to their resumé after previously winning the Carroll Kuemper Invitational and the Spencer Invitational.

"We had a good season," Bruning said. "We did lose four quality seniors from our varsity team who are going to be tough to replace."

Along with Doorn, a three-time state qualifier, Spencer lost graduates Chelsea Chapman, Jaime Hynes and Katlyn Ketterling from the '07 varsity squad.

For the Tigers to put themselves back into the Lakes Conference mix, Spencer will need to fill those holes and fill them quickly.

Holck, now a two-time state qualifier -- once as an individual -- leads Spencer into the 2008 season after placing 26th individually at the state meet last season. Holck turned in 18-hole rounds of 82 and 90 at Otter Creek and Jester Park. Holck finished her junior campaign with All-Conference, All-District and second team All-State honors.

Kara Merchant
Along with Holck, seniors Kara Merchant and Emily Andersen bring with them returning varsity experience. Both Merchant and Andersen saw time in the varsity lineup throughout the '07 season and will immediately assume Spencer's No. 2 and No. 3 positions.

Spencer's final two spots will come down to a competition between a number of individuals, including seniors Katie Rettey and Katie Simons, sophomore Ryann DeYoung and freshman Suzanne Rettey.

"We have about four girls with a some varsity experience and we do have a lot of girls who have played at the junior varsity level," Bruning commented.

Katie Rettey
Entering the season, Bruning sees Spirit Lake and Emmetsburg as the biggest challengers to Spencer's bid for a second straight Lakes Conference championship.

The title may very well come down to how quickly the inexperienced Tigers transition to the full-time varsity roster.

"We need to have a couple girls step up, claim some varsity spots and look to contribute night in and night out," Bruning said. "Our level of success will depend on getting those scores from the low 50s into the high 40s and from the high 50s into the low 50s. We can never be content where we're at. We have to keep improving and keep working every day on the range and on the practice green if we want to accomplish some of the goals we set at the beginning of the year."
