(Photo by Randy M. Cauthron) Harriet Stanley (Meghan Vosberg) presents Sheridan Whiteside (Scott McCord) with a hand picked present, while his secretary, Maggie (Kim Steffen) looks on in terror in a scene from Spencer High School's production of "The Man Who Came To Dinner."

What happens when a dinner guest shows up and winds up staying for six weeks?

That's the premise behind the Moss Hart and George S. Kaufman comedy, "The Man Who Came to Dinner" which will be presented by the Spencer High School Drama Department in the Spencer Auditorium.

The answer to the initial question will keep audiences laughing for the duration of the performance.

The three-show run will begin Friday night, continue Saturday evening and conclude with a Sunday matinee. The two evening shows will begin at 7:30 p.m. and the matinee will start at 2 p.m.

Director Larry Untiet has overseen a cast of 15 men, nine women and a collection of extras as they bring the play, penned by the same authors who created "You Can't Take It With You," "George Washington Slept Here," "The American Way," and "The Fabulous Invalid" to the stage.

The tale centers around Sheridan Whiteside (Scott McCord), who dined at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley (Tyler Steinkamp and Brianna Wright) and suffers a fall on their doorstep, breaking his hip.

Confined to the Stanley's home, the obnoxious and ridiculously demanding Whiteside - based on a real life newspaper critic and radio's "Town Crier" Alexander Woollcott who came to prominence in the 20s and 30s - takes over the lower level of the Stanley home, all but banishing them from using it.

During his stay, he also invites ex-convicts to meals and runs up a transatlantic phone bill of $784. Whiteside also begins receiving strange gifts which lead to wild animals in the home and an infestation of roaches.

The story continues to spin out of control when his personal secretary Maggie (Kim Steffen) falls for a reporter, Bert (Jon Davis). Whiteside attempts to stop the fledgling romance and in doing so brings about the introduction of a whole new group of characters to the Stanley home.

Jill Applegate is the assistant director, Alyssa Carlson is the stage manager, and Kelsey Stoever is the house manager.
