Memorial services for John Giza, 84, of Sutherland, and formerly of Chicago, Ill., will be held at 10:30 a.m., today, Thursday, March 27, 2008, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Sutherland. The Rev. Tim Hogan will officiate.

There will be a military flag presentation, held by the American Legion Post No. 152 following the services at the church.

There will be no public visitation. The family will be present for one hour prior to services at the church.

Burial will be at a later date at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Ill.

John passed away Tuesday, March 25, 2008. at Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn.

John Andrew Giza, the son of John Philip and Magdalena Mary Sugel, was born Dec. 13, 1923, in Genoa City, Wis. His childhood years were spent in Chicago, Ill., where he received his education.

John married Frances "Nancy" Zerdin on May 14, 1955, in Chicago, and entered the military serving with the U.S. Army from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1964, retiring after 20 years of serving his country. Following his discharge, they lived in California where he was a postal employee for the U.S. Government for 20 years until his retirement.

He was preceded in death by six sisters; and one brother.

John is survived by his wife, Frances (Nancy) Giza of Sutherland; and one sister, Dorothy Giza.

The Warner Funeral Home of Sutherland is in charge of arrangements.
