Services for Russel Reed were held Monday, March 24, 2008, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. Rev. Steve Ellerbusch and Rev. Luther Thoresen officiated the service.

Russel passed away Thursday, March 20, 2008, at the Ruthven Community Care Center at the age of 92.

Interment took place at Crown Hill Cemetery of Ruthven.

Russel Erie Reed, son of Willard and Ella (Goodsen) Reed, was born Aug. 1, 1915, near Van Meter. He attended country school in Dallas County, and in 1928 Russel moved near Ruthven. He then attended Ruthven High School graduating in 1933.

On March 31, 1939, Russel was united in marriage to Marie Nomann in Van Meter. To this union four children were born. Russel and Marie farmed in Palo Alto County for many years. Russel did both grain farming as well as having livestock.

Russel was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. He was also an active member of Highland Lodge in Ruthven. Russel served on Lakeside Lutheran Home Board of Directors as well as the Ayrshire Elevator Board. He worked at the Great Oak Township polls during elections for several years.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son-in-law, Roger Baxter; and a great grandson, Trent Cummings.

Russel is survived by his wife, Marie of Emmetsburg; his children: Dale Reed and his wife, Jean of Emmetsburg, Darrel Reed and his wife, Nancy of Ayrshire, Arlene Baxter of Ayrshire, and Roger Reed and his wife, Angela of Ruthven; 15 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and two sisters: Mary Sweet of Fort Dodge, and Helen Imes and her husband, Bill of Ruthven.

Arrangements were being handled by Martin-Mattice Funeral Home.
