Funeral services for Larry McKeever, 71, of Spencer, will be held today, Thursday, Feb. 28, 2008, at First English Lutheran Church in Spencer. Rev. Paul Kaldahl will officiate the 10:30 a.m. service.

Military services will be conducted by Glen Pedersen Post No. 1 American Legion members following the graveside services. Burial will be at North Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Spencer.

Mr. McKeever passed away Monday, Feb. 25, 2008, at his home in Spencer.

Larry Eldon McKeever was born in Clay County, Douglas Township, Linn Grove, on April 23, 1936, to Everett Wayne McKeever and Vila Mary Walker. Larry attended first grade at the age of five as one of two students in the class. Larry graduated from Royal Community High School in 1953. After graduating, Larry did some traveling, working on a ranch in California breaking horses, and other odd jobs. Larry then served with the U.S. Army stationed in Boblingen, Germany with an Honorable Discharge in 1958. Following his time in the Army, Larry returned home to help with the family farming, and other local farmers.

Larry began working at the Quaker Oats Elevator in Royal as a feed truck driver, where he met his true love, Sharon LaRae Goettsche. Larry and Sharon were married on Sept. 17, 1961, on a glorious day at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. In 1964, Larry and Sharon moved from Royal to Spencer and Larry began working for Buena Vista Rural Electric Cooperative. In 1995, Larry was forced to retire from Iowa Lakes Electric Cooperative due to ongoing health issues.

Larry was a member of the First English Lutheran Church in Spencer, and very much enjoyed serving lunches at Iowa Great Lakes Lutheran School, volunteer work at church, and delivering Meals on Wheels. Larry received a single lung transplant on Aug. 3, 2000.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a niece, Nancy Long; a grandson, Kolby Larry McKeever; and two brothers-in-law: Bill Long and Bill Goettsche.

Larry is survived by his wife, Sharon of Spencer; three sons: and their families: Mitch McKeever and wife, Laura of Sac City, Iowa Dr. Tom McKeever and wife, Pam of Mukwanago, Wis., and Doyle McKeever and wife, Tammy of Spencer; seven grandchildren; a sister, Ardis Long of Mesa, Ariz.; his mother-in-law, June Goettsche of Spencer; his father-in-law, Hans Goettsche of Fernley, Nevada; and sister-in-laws: Joanne Goettsche of Richmond, Calif., Kelly Goettsche of Lucerne, Colo., and Candy Galbraith and her husband, Mark of Storm Lake.

Memorials may be directed to Fairview-University of Minnesota Transplant Clinic or to the Iowa Great Lakes Lutheran School in Spencer.
