Betty passed away Saturday, Feb. 16, 2008, at Spencer Hospital.
Betty Caren Klarstrom, the daughter of Harry and Kristina (Frank) Nielsen, was born Oct. 2, 1914, in Sioux City. At the age of one, Betty's parents moved to Cleghorn, where she was baptized in the Presbyterian Church. As a young child, Betty's parents moved to a farm north of Hartley where she attended a country school in Harrison Township. After graduating from eighth grade, Betty stayed home a year and attended confirmation at the Trinity Evangelical Reform Church. She attended High School in Hartley, graduating with a class of 34 in 1934. Following graduation, Betty worked at an Egg Grading business until she met Claude whom she married on Aug. 18, 1940, and was married 55 years before he passed away.
Betty and Claude farmed in the Clay County area and after their 2 daughters started school, Betty worked for the Delaney Nursing Home in Spencer for 11½ years. She also did private care for Art Anderson (President of Clay County National Bank) and his wife. Following Art's death, Betty worked 11 years at Aalf's Sewing Factory, and her last employment was custodian at Bethany Lutheran Church for 21 years.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and her husband, Claude on June 16, 1995.
Betty is survived by two daughters: Connie Noble and husband, Richard and Janice Alexander and husband, Dean; four married grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Art Nielsen of Pipestone, Minn.; one sister, Pearl Protextor of Sanborn; one sister-in-law, Joyce Kiley of Erie, Colo.; and two brothers-in-law: Jack Protextor of Sanborn, and Larry Kiley of Erie, Colo.
Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.
