Amelia Axdahl Gilbert
Funeral services for Mrs. Amelia Axdahl Gilbert, 99, of Peterson, will be held at 11 a.m., Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, at United Methodist Church of Peterson. Rev. Roger Maize will officiate the service.
Visitation will begin at 4 p.m., Sunday with the family present from 4-6 p.m. at the Warner Funeral Home of Peterson.
Interment will take place at Waterman Cemetery of Sutherland.
Amelia passed away Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, at Sutherland Care Center of Sutherland.
Amelia Axdahl Gilbert, the daughter of Andrew and Christina Axdahl, was born Nov. 29, 1908, in O'Brien County. She was educated in rural schools near Primghar and Paullina, graduating from the Gaza High School in 1925. She attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake to get her teaching certification, taught two years in the Grant Township School in O'Brien County, and five years in Alta Consolidated Schools.
She was united in marriage to Ralph Gilbert on March 11, 1935. They farmed the E.C. Bertram farm north of Peterson for several years, and then bought a farm west of Peterson in 1943 where they lived for over 40 years. In 1985, she and Ralph moved into a new home in the town of Peterson. Throughout her life, Amelia was very active in her church groups at the Peterson United Methodist Church, serving as superintendent of the Sunday School for many years, and as president of the Women's Society. With their two children, she also became involved in 4-H and Cub Scouts in addition to lots of school activities.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ralph in 1999; and her sister, Bertina Hill.
Amelia is survived by two children: Dr. Beth Gilbert and husband, Paul Martin of Superior, Wis., and Dean Gilbert and wife, Peggy of Phoenix, Ariz.; four granddaughters; two step-granddaughters; and six great-grandchildren.
Warner Funeral Home of Sutherland is in charge of arrangements.
