(Photo submitted) Cellist Julia Bruskin, pianist Donna Kwong, and violinist Emily Bruskin make up the Claremont Trio. They will perform in Spencer on Feb. 22.

The Spencer Area Concert Association will host one of today's most exciting young classical ensembles when the Claremont Trio comes to town on Friday, Feb. 22. The three beautiful and talented young women have gained the praise of music critics for their "exuberant performances" and "gutsy repertoire."

The concert will take place at the Old Middle School Auditorium in Spencer, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

The Claremont Trio features twin sisters Emily and Julia Bruskin on violin and cello and Donna Kwong on piano. They began performing together in 1999 when all three were students at the Juilliard School of Music in New York, taking their name from nearby Claremont Avenue. After winning the 2001 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, they launched their touring career with an acclaimed New York debut at the 92nd Street Y.

Since then, the Claremonts have performed at major concert venues throughout the country and abroad, including Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, and the Kennedy Center, as well as at major music festivals such as the Ravinia Festival. When their debut CD of Mendelssohn trios was released in 2004, Gramophone magazine praised it for giving "large-scale performances with a sweeping, romantic sense of space and strong dramatic contrasts."

For their Spencer concert, the Claremont Trio will perform Beethoven's Piano Trio in B flat, Bizet's "Jeux d'Enfants" Suite, and the Piano Trio No 1 in D minor by Anton Arensky, a protégé of Tchaikovsky. Their most recent CD includes a performance of the Arensky trio..

Admission to the concert is free to members of the Spencer Area Concert Association. Members of the Algona, Sheldon, and Windom concert associations may also attend free by presenting their membership cards at the door. Individual tickets for non-members will be available at the box office on the evening of the performance. Ticket prices are $10 (adults), $5 (students), or $20 (family).

In addition, memberships for the remainder of the concert season are available at Arts on Grand or at the door at specially discounted prices of $30 (adults), $10 (students), and $65 (families). Members can attend all three of the remaining concerts in the Spencer Area Concert Association's 2007--2008 season, including "Simply Sinatra" on May 9. In addition, they can use their Spencer membership cards for free admission to programs presented by concert associations in Algona, Sheldon, and Windom, MN. Those programs include performances by the Hunt Family Fiddlers in both Algona and Sheldon and by the Golden Dragon Acrobats in Windom.

As with other concerts this year, free transportation is available for Spencer members who need it thanks to the Regional Transit Authority (Rides) and Spencer Municipal Utilities. To arrange for transportation, phone 262-4500 by noon Thursday, Feb. 21.
