Arts on Grand offers a Valentine Class

Arts on Grand in Spencer is offering a class for children from 2:45-3:45 p.m. on a early dismissal day, today. Students will paint pre- made clay hearts and beads to make a Valentine wall hanging for the wall or door.

February ECI meeting

The Lakes Area Employers' Council (ECI) will be meeting at 12 p.m. today at Godfather's Pizza in Spencer. All employers, human resource personnel and other staff members are invited to attend. The program features Chris Niles, executive officer from Sioux City. She will be demonstrating how employers can register and create an account using the IWorks system to more effectively manage job offers.

Early dismissal, no school in Spencer

Spencer Community Schools announce that there will be early dismissals at 2:30 p.m. today for Parent/Teacher Conferences. There will be no school on Friday, Feb. 15 and Monday, Feb. 18.

People for Pets Valentine's Day cancelled

The People for Pets Valentine's Day open house scheduled for today at the People for Pets building has been cancelled. A similar event will be held at a later date.

Order your daffodils today

American Cancer Society Daffodil Days orders will be taken through Feb. 14. Contact Regina Harleman at (712) 262-5633 or Marcia Dirks at (712) 835-2128 to place an order. All orders can be picked up at the Southpark Mall from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on March 11-12.

School Budget Reduction List available Feb. 15

The list of potential budget reductions will be made available to the public on Friday, Feb. 15. This list can be picked up at the Central Office on Feb. 15, between 7 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., 23 E. 7th St. The list will also be available online at: www.spencer iowaschools.com. There will be a public hearing on Feb. 18, 5 p.m. at the Central Office.

Shaky Tree open mic

Shaky Tree Coffee is hosting a community Open Mic event at 8 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15. The public is invited to come share their talent with others in a safe and supportive environment. Sing, play an instrument, tell a joke, or read a poem, whatever your talent is we want you to share it Registration begins at 7:30 p.m.

Winter Craft Show

The Winter Craft Show will be held this Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 15-17 at the Southpark Mall. The Quilt Show will be Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 16-17. There will be many quilts on display across from Payless Shoesource. Many Craft vendors from five different states, jewelry, pottery, ceramics, baby items, wood items, garden décor, beaded jewelry, and much more.

Soup and pie supper and silent auction

DaySpring Assembly will host a soup and pie supper and silent auction from 5-8 p.m., Friday, Feb. 15. A freewill donation will be accepted. Soups include: Chili, corn and potato chowder, and African chicken stew. Silent auction taking place throughout the evening. All proceeds to missions project. Items include: One-day guided fishing trip at Okoboji, men's bicycle, women's bicycle, salon package, home cleaning, handyman services, jewelry, baby quilts, and much more.

Genealogy Society to meet

The Iowa Lakes Genealogy Society will meet at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Spencer Public library in the round room. Please remember to bring your lists of resources in your home for the newsletter. Complete with name, address and email so others may contact you. Who knows what connection may be in your future.

Great Backyard Bird Count

Prairie Lakes Audubon Society and the Dickinson County Conservation Board are participating in the Annual Great Backyard Bird count from 8:30-10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16. Join us at the Horseshoe Bend warming house to discover more about the birds around us as we identify and count the birds at the feeders. All ages and all skill levels welcome at this fun educational event.

Beginning Experience weekend

Beginning Experience of Northwestern Iowa will be holding a weekend for divorced, widowed, or separated (with divorce pending) persons of all faiths, Feb. 15-17, at Camp Okoboji, Okoboji. Through talks, group dialogue, and personal reflection, the participants have an opportunity for growth, healing and closure on the past in order to begin anew.

Aviation Day Camp

Local Spencer pilots and BSA are teaming up for Aviation Day Camp, open to youth age 14 to 20 on Sunday, Feb. 17 at the Spencer Airport. Registration will begin at 12:30 and program runs from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Cost is $7. During the camp, students will have the chance to hear about the different functions and trainings of pilots, airplanes, and airports, as well as get a flying lesson with a local Spencer Pilot. Spots are still open but space is limited.

NAMI meeting Feb. 18

The monthly meeting of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 18 at Season's Center for Community Mental Health, 201 E. 11th St. A short business meeting will be followed by care and share as well as an update on legislation affecting mental health services. NAMI is available for all family members, care providers, and persons with mental illness who can benefit from a supportive network that provides information and education to understand and better cope with mental illness.
