Edwin L. Youmans, 84, of West Chester, Pa., retired Dean and Professor Emeritus at West Chester University, passed away Jan. 11, 2008, at Barclay Friends Home.
Arrangements are pending. Edwin grew up in Estherville, where he graduated from Estherville High School in 1942. A year after graduation, he entered the Navy, where he completed the U.S. Navy Cadet Program and was graduated Ensign, designated navel aviator, and assigned to a Navy fighter group. Upon completing his military service, Edwin enrolled at Iowa State Teacher's College where he received a bachelor's degree in physical education. He subsequently went on to earn both masters and doctoral degrees from the University of Iowa.
Edwin, a lifelong educator, began his career teaching and coaching in high schools, first in Creston, then Faribault, Minn. In 1960, he came to West Chester University to administer the newly-establiched graduate program in its School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. While at West Chester University, Edwin coached track and field, taught both graduate and undergraduate level courses, and ultimately served as Dean of the School of
Health and Physical Education.
Edwin married his high school sweetheart, Marjorie Henrich, in 1943. They raised two daughters, Terry Spadoni and Valerie Odell.
Edwin is survived by his wife, Marjorie of West Chester; daughters: Terry Spadoni and Valerie Odell; and four grandchildren.
