Rueben Percy Heggestad, 86, of Okoboji, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Rube was born on July 29, 1921, to Erick ("Ed") and Gunda (Veium) Heggestad in Stoughton, Wisc. He was raised and worked on the family farm before attending the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
Rube married Betty Jane Jackson, his wife of 64 years, on Nov. 6, 1943. Together they had five sons and one daughter.
Rube spent his career in the meat industry including Wilson & Company, Dougdale Packing Company, IBP, and Spencer Packing Company. Later he formed his own meat brokerage business, Heggestad Brokerage.
Rueben is survived by his wife, Betty Jane; one sister, Helen Lippitt of Oconomawac, Wis.; his sons; Gene and wife, Claudia of St. Joseph, Mo., Robert of Washington, D.C., Jerry of West Virginia, Richard and wife, Cheryl of Witchita, Kansas, his daughter, Diane Bjornstad and husband, Ned of Spirit Lake; and son David of Eugene, Ore.; 13 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, with their sixth great-grandchild due in April of this year.
