Fire departments respond to early morning call at Eaton Corp.

Friday, December 7, 2007
A call shortly before 3 a.m., Thursday brought fire departments from Spencer and Fostoria to Eaton Corporation in Spencer after a fire was confirmed by employees.

The Spencer Fire Department arrived on scene, met with Eaton employees and were directed to the fire in the heat treat area on the west-center side of the plant.

The fire, which has been ruled accidental, was quickly extinguished

The fire occurred when oil residue and dust was ignited in the ventilation duct work below a roof exhaust fan. This duct work went to an afterburner on a heat treat furnace/oven in the plant.

Firefighters worked in the building and on the roof to take care of the problem, and were on the scene for close to one hour.

The Spencer Fire Department was assisted by the Fostoria Fire Department, Eaton plant response personnel, Spencer Ambulance, Spencer Police, and the Clay County Sheriff's Office.

The exhaust fan was destroyed in the fire and damage amounts are pending.
