Funeral services for Virgil J. Rolfes, 78, of Lake Park, were held Monday, Oct. 29, 2007, at St. Mary's Catholic Church of Spirit Lake. Interment took place at the Silver Lake Cemetery of Lake Park.

Virgil passed away Thursday, Oct. 25, 2007, at Lake Park Care Center.

Virgil J. Rolfes was born to Frank and Ida (Dreckman) Rolfes at LeMars, Iowa, on Jan. 13, 1929. He attended St. Joseph School in LeMars for six years and then rural country school for two years.

On Sept. 10, 1957, he married Carol Paskert at Remsen. She died in 1994. In 1998 he married Elvera Matthiesen.

Virgil farmed in the LeMars, Merrill and Lake Park area and moved into Lake Park in 1977. He worked for Arnold Grain in Lake Park and later for the Lake Park Post Office for 12 years.

He served as President of Lake Park Lions for three terms and was an honorary member of the 4th degree Knights. He was a member of the Horseshoe Pitching Association of America and played in National Horseshoe Tournamenst. Virgil also served on the Park Board

Virgil is survived by his wife, Elvera Rolfes of Lake Park; four sons: Jeffrey Rolfes of Lake Park, Doug Rolfes and wife, Terri of Spencer, Joel Rolfes and wife, Melissa of Milford, and Marty Rolfes and wife, Paula of Redfield; and eight grandchildren.

Turner Funeral Home of Lake Park is in charge of arrangements.
