Ten SHS students earn all-state honors

Ten students of Spencer High School have attained the highest individual honor available to Iowa high school musicians by being selected as members of the 2007 All-State Band and Chorus.

These students, under the direction of Katie Kardell and Kurt Schwarck, are: Alyssa Carlson (French Horn), daughter of Stein and Kristie Carlson; Jon Davis (Baritone), son of Monica Peterson and Greg Davis; Jonathan Gabhart (Bass), son of Craig and Christi Gabhart; Ashley Kabrick (Clarinet), daughter of Chris and Angie Kabrick; Anna Robison (Alto), daughter of Dr. David and Shelly Robison; Michael Seeley (Euphonium), son of Dick and Dawn Seeley; Tyler Steinkamp (Baritone), son of Tom and Cindy Steinkamp; Kim Steffen (Soprano), daughter of Tim and Sherri Steffen; Hannah Thiesse (Soprano), daughter of Jim and Theresa Thiesse; Devin van Holsteijn (Tenor Saxophone), son of Ed and Carla van Holsteijn.

The 2007 Festival will celebrate the 61st anniversary of this prestigious event.

District auditions for the 279-piece All-State Band, 197-piece Orchestra and 600-voice All-State Chorus were held Saturday, Oct. 20 at Storm Lake, Hampton, Oelwein, Atlantic, Indianola and Fairfield. Approximately 17 percent of the students who audition are selected for membership in the All-State ensembles.

Spencer Community Schools had 17 students audition for the chorus and six students audition for the band.

Selected participants will rehearse in Ames on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15-17, and the Festival Concert will be presented to the public at 7:30 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum, Iowa State University, Ames, on Saturday evening, Nov. 17, 2005. Iowa Public Television will record the concert for broadcast tentatively scheduled for 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 22 and again at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 25.
