Two Clay County cities have contested races and five communities don't have enough names to fill out a ballot after the filing deadline passed for the Nov. 6 city elections.

All 10 mayors and 34 city council members in Clay County have terms set to expire.

That includes five city council positions in Gillett Grove where residents will once again have a lively election season. Seven contenders are seeking five spots on the city council. It's the only Clay County community outside of Spencer that has more names than it needs to fill out the available offices.

James Scott Jr. is uncontested for the Gillett Grove mayor's position. The seven residents seeking a two-year term on the five-member city council are: Lewis L. Clark, Gerri Jessen, Kay Kibbie, Donald Knephoff Jeff Koenig, Trish Scott and Lorriane Vanderpool.

Jessen, a part-time restaurant worker and the current mayor, mounted a successful challenge in 2005 to oust incumbent mayor Robert Berger. She's a city council candidate this time around.

Voters will have to brush up on their candidate name spellings in Rossie where, once again, no one filed for the mayor's post or five city council openings. A spot on the Rossie ballot for the clerk/treasurer's position also will have to be decided by write-in.

In addition to the Rossie openings, at least two council seats in Greenville, two in Dickens and one each in Fostoria and Royal will have to be decided by write-in.
