Wrapping up a statewide tour last week, U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA), accompanied by his wife, Ruth, stopped at, and toured, Arts on Grand Saturday afternoon. Before his tour, which was conducted by Mary Rahn, Harkin (center) and wife, Ruth (to his left) visited with Barb Workman, Martin Arthur and others who were on hand to welcome him to Spencer. Harkin's interest in Arts on Grand, centered around the fact that the facility and its coordinators seek to bring art into the community by providing a space where local artists can showcase their talent. Harkin also stopped at the Iowa Lakes Community College site in Estherville to tour the Sustainable Energy Education Program later Saturday afternoon. This innovative program at the college is answering the call for more trained, skilled workers in the renewable energy industry. Harkin recently secured $250,000 for the program to purchase equipment and other resources.
