Memorial services for Paul Fredrick Johnson, 82, of Marshalltown, formerly of Estherville, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 23, 2007, with military graveside rites to be performed by VFW Pot 3388 and American Legion Post 91 of Estherville. Interment will be held at High Lake Township Cemetery of rural Wallingford.

Rev. Harold Heinzig will officiate the service.

Paul passed away Wednesday, May 30, 2007, at Marshalltown Medical and Surgical Center in Marshalltown.

Paul, the son of Johnnie and Thelma (Pranke) Johnson, was born Jan. 18, 1925, in Estherville.

He graduated from Estherville High School in 1943. Following his graduation from high school, Paul served in the United States Navy during World War II and was stationed in the Pacific Theatre. After his honorable discharge from military service, Paul returned to the Estherville area and began farming with his father. Then he attended Waldorf, College in Forest City, where he majored in business administration. While attending Waldorf he played on the football team and sang in the choir.

On June 28, 1948, Paul was united in marriage to Harriet Platts at Salem Lutheran Church in Lake Mills . After their wedding the couple made their home in rural Wallingford near High Lake where Paul farmed the family farm. In 1959, the family moved to a farm near Gruver, where they farmed until 1974, when they retired from farming and moved to Storm Lake. Harriet died Oct. 12, 1995. In 2000, Paul moved to Early, to make his home. In 2003, he moved to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown where he lived until the time of his death.

He was a former member of Wallingford Lutheran Church and Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church south of Gruver. He was a member of VFW Post 3388, the Wallingford American Legion Post and AMVETS while living in Storm Lake.

Preceding him in death were his wife; parents; brother, Alvin Johnson; two sisters: Carolyn and Olive; and two nephews.

Paul is survived by his three children: Clarine Johnson of Spencer, David Johnson of Spencer; and Richard Johnson and his wife, Lisa of Spencer; one brother, Ole Johnson and his wife, Karen of Minneapolis, Minn.; one sister, Joan Teran of California; and one granddaughter.

Henry-Olson Funeral Chapel of Estherville is in charge of arrangements.
