Funeral services for Donald Clarence Steffen, 80, of Spencer, will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, June 16, 2007 at the First Congregational Church in Spencer. The Revs. Wendy Van Tassell and Tom Van Tassell will officiate the service.

Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery in Spencer at a later date.

Mr. Steffen passed away Tuesday, June 12, 2007, at his home in Spencer.

Donald Steffen

Donald "Doodle" Steffen, the son of Clarence Rudolf and Hilda Augusta Schoelerman Steffen, was born Feb. 28, 1927 in Royal. His childhood years were spent in the Royal area where he received his early education, graduating from Everly High School in 1944. After graduation Don served in the army, and was stationed in Italy during the second World War.

Don married Lucile Olson on June 5, 1949. Following their marriage, they farmed near Rossie until they moved to Spencer in 1995. Don was an active member of the Rossie United Church of Christ and the First Congregational Church in Spencer. Don served on the Board of Directors for the Clay County Fair and the Royal Telephone Company, and was involved with the Clay County Soil and Water Conservation District for 30 years.

Don was inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame honoring 70 years of service to Clay County 4-H.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers: Ingwer and Kenneth.

Donald is survived by his wife, Lucile of Spencer; three sons: Jay and wife, Murt of Ames, Terry and wife, Marcia of Linn Grove, and Cory and wife, Susan of Linn Grove; one daughter, Connie of Altoona; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
