Harold L. Reit, 87 of West Des Moines, formerly of the Algona and Emmetsburg area, passed away Wednesday May 9, 2007 with his family around him at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 12, 2007 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Emmetsburg. Rev. Steve Ellerbusch will officiate.

Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in Emmetsburg with military rites conducted by the Emmetsburg VFW Post 2295.

Harold was born on Dec. 7, 1919, in Sioux County, the son of John and Josie (Abma) Reit. He served as a staff sergeant in the 42nd Rainbow Division of the U.S. Army during WWII. He was in the European and Pacific Theatres. Harold was involved in the Battle of the Bulge and was at Dachau when it was liberated in 1945. Harold owned and operated five bakeries during his life. He started in the business in South Dakota and from 1960-1976 he ran Reit's Bake Shop in Emmetsburg. During the early 1970's he was a three time Iowa Baker of the Year. In 1977 he started Reit's Bakery in Algona, retiring in 1979. Harold continued to work part-time decorating in Algona and later in Des Moines. He was a member of the Izzak Walton League, Algona and Emmetsburg Chambers, Algona and Emmetsburg Rotary Clubs where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. In 1990 he built and donated the "Do-Mobile" for the Algona Rotary Club. On Oct. 1, 1993 Harold was united in marriage with Mary McGuire in Kossuth County. Harold and Mary moved from Algona to Des Moines. In Des Moines Harold volunteered at the VA Hospital.

He was preceded in death by his parents; step mother, Jennie Reit; wife, Carrie Reit; a son, David Reit; four brothers: Richard, Wayne, Herman, and Stanley Reit; and a sister, Jan Unzelman.

Harold is survived by his wife, Mary of West Des Moines; a daughter, Carolyn Mittendorf and her husband, Jerry of Sioux Falls, S.D.; threes sons: Larry Reit and his wife, Karen of Sumter, S.C., Loren Reit and his wife, Denise of Spencer, and Kevin Reit and his wife, Jayne of Omaha, Neb..; a daughter-in-law, Rose Reit of Emmetsburg; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; three sisters: Tillie Zwak and her husband, Gerritt of Sioux Falls, Edna Steineke of Hartford, S.D., and Joyce Hayes of Sioux Falls; and two sister-in-laws, Donna Reit of Sioux Falls, and Darlene Reit of Dell Rapids, S.D.
