Services for Mrs. Viola Sassman Goodwin, 85 of Spencer will be held at 10:30 a.m., today, Tuesday, March 13, 2007 at Warner Chapel of Spencer. Rev. Bart DeBoer will officiate the service.

Interment will take place at 1:30 p.m. today following lunch at Poland Township Cemetery of Marathon.

Casket bearers will be Kasen Meyer, Bobby Dean Sassman, Jason Sassman, Chad Sassman, Britt Sassman and Lenny Sassman.

Honorary casket bearers will be Stacey Sassman, Kim Rettig and Anna Weatherman.

Viola passed away on Friday, March 9, 2007 at St. Luke Lutheran Home of Spencer.

Viola, the daughter of Carl and Ermal Moses Reusch, was born Sept. 7, 1921 on a farm near Paulina. Viola married Robert George Sassman on June 27, 1940.  They had three children.  In 1955, On May 6, 1960, Viola married Glen Charles Goodwin. With this union Viola became wife, mother and grandmother gaining six children.

\Viola was an active member of First Baptist Church, teaching Sunday school and participating in many church activities. She was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles, and involved with Easter Seals.  She went back to school in 1971, and furthered her education at Iowa Lakes Community College to help handicapped individuals after she, herself, became physically handicapped from a severe stroke. She attended Lee Holt Center for adult day services.  She purchased bells, which later became the Riverview Bell Choir of Riverview Terrace Assisted Living where she became a resident in August of 2005. In January 2006, Viola's health again worsened and she was moved to St. Luke Lutheran Nursing Home.

Warner Funeral Home of Spencer is in charge of arrangements.
