The Spencer High School Girls' Regional basketball game against Storm Lake at Cherokee, scheduled for Tuesday night, has been postponed to Wednesday, February 24 at 7 p.m. at Cherokee.
Burnette, Suter fight to headline Spencer Sprawl (02/16/10)
Tri-State Cage Fighting will be making its debut with Spring Sprawl at the Clay County Regional Events Center, Saturday, Feb. 20. Eric Burnette from Hartley, is scheduled to fight Trevor Suter of Estherville in the 155-pound main event of the evening. Alyssa Vanderhoff lived life to the fullest. She did it her own special way in what some believe to be a man's world. The 15-year-old's spirit -- and passion for bull riding -- was honored recently during a special tribute at the Extreme Bullriding Tour's finale. The finals championship hosted New Year's Eve in Madison, Neb., celebrated the conclusion of the 2009 season for the Extreme Bullriding Tour.

Storm cited as factor in fatal crash (07/11/09)
The Clay County Sheriff's Department said Thursday's stormy weather may have contributed to a fatal, head-on collision one mile west of Ruthven near the Palo Alto County line. The crash claimed 77-year-old Opal Lucille Frerichs of Spencer. Deputies think she was traveling east in a 1991 Corsica. She drifted into the westbound lane and into the path of oncoming traffic along U.S. Highway 18 at 4:20 p.m. Frerichs was pronounced dead at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg...

The Spencer teenager will join Daniel Rediske, of Waverly, to represent the state of Iowa during the upcoming American Legion Boys Nation summer session. Royal mother, daughter change lives in Honduras (05/07/09)
They left with bags filled to the brim with goodies for others. Lynn and Courtney Cronk of Royal returned home with the clothes on their backs, a few souvenirs created by their Honduran hosts, grateful hearts and a desire to raise awareness about impoverished regions of the world and others inhabiting them who need help. The two women took part in the Gehlen Catholic Mission Honduras' 10th mission trip to Honduras, the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Their 12-day trip, which lasted from March 30 until April 10, included a traveling team consisting of 22 high school students from eight different school systems and 10 adult chaperones from five different states.
