We keep talking about the need to keep our streets safe for our children, yet time and time again, I read stories -- not from national papers, but papers right here in Iowa -- regarding sex offenders re-offending against children or teens. Had they been locked up, the risk of re-offense would have been non-existent. You see, sexual predators don't have access to children or teens -- often their targets -- when they are confined in a prison or institution. Unfortunately we seem more worried about the offender's rights, overcrowded prison populations and the need for "second chances" than we do for the safety of our kids. I'm talking about your sexual predators of course, not some teenage kid who got caught with his girlfriend by angry parents who press stat rape charges. And I'm not talking about the drunk who's stupid enough to urinate near a city park because they know not what they do. Not justifying those two things, just suggesting they're not exactly sexual predator threats to society. I'm talking about your dangerous sexual abuse minded individuals. I'm sick of reading about violent sex offenders re-offending. This should definitely be a one strike and you're out crime.
Toss in those who traffic human beings and are involved in the business end of the sex trade. Anyone who is involved with pimping, prostituting or selling a human being for any reason needs to be hauled away and never seen again. Period.
There should be no wiggle room, no grey area, no compassion. Sex offenders and sex traffickers have no place in civilized society.
