Share the Road and Be Safe
Posted Monday, August 12, at 9:31 AM
A 19 yr old SDSU Cross Country athlete was killed while training when a van crossed the center line and hit him. He was running on the shoulder of the roadway. There is a white cross on the South side of the road on West 4th Street signifying the place where a runner or a bicyclist lost his life due to a vehicle...

Family Vacation
Posted Wednesday, July 24, at 2:01 PM

What did I learn on our family vacation this year? Well our kids are older so they sleep more. Illinois, Indiana & Ohio look a LOT like Iowa. Pennsylvania does not. It is all mountains and forest. Beautiful. The Pro Football Hall of Fame was cool but really at $22/adults and $18/kids a bit ridiculous. ...

Circle of Safety Check
Posted Wednesday, May 1, at 11:05 AM

With all the ongoing construction going on especially in our area, West 4th St and the new West Byway...I thought this was timely. Construction crews leave their huge equipment at the site which is right next to residential areas and like it or not, believe it or not...small children often play in the area without much supervision. ...

Take from the Soliders....again.
Posted Friday, March 8, at 11:26 AM

My brother, SFC, Brent Juelfs posted this via a friend of his. This is a shame from a shameful Congress and President. http://www.armytimes.com/news/2013/03/army-army-to-suspend-tuition-assistance-030813 "Why not, if budget cuts are made the U.S. Soldier should have more taken from him cause we just don't give up enough. ...

Public School Curriculum and common sense
Posted Thursday, January 10, at 10:08 AM

Let me preface this blog with: I am not talking about Spencer Schools only. This is a state and federal issue. Algebra, Geometry, Consumer Finance, Industrial Arts (shop), Family & Consumer Science (home ec)...so many choices and those are only a few of them but which ones make the most sense for students?...

Sick Policy
Posted Friday, November 30, at 9:55 AM

As a registered childcare provider, I have a sick policy. Children cannot come to my childcare if they have vomited, had diarrhea, or a fever in the past 24 hours. This is to protect not only the other children in my care but my own family as well. If a child exhibits those symptoms while in my care and I know it is due to illness and not other childhood issues such as teething, common cold or medication than the parents are required to pick up their child and take them home. ...

Who should pay?
Posted Tuesday, November 20, at 1:36 PM

Someone posted this question on Facebook and I was just wondering what others thought about it. If your child's glasses are broken on the playground or in PE or other class during incidental contact with another child...non-combative or non-competitive, should the other child's parent be partially responsible for repairs or replacement? The same could be asked of clothing, shoes, equipment etc. What do you think?...

Helping Heroes Kids
Posted Thursday, September 13, at 2:30 PM

On Saturday I am running in the Mudfactor run in Gretna, NE. It's a 5K obstacle mud run. A friend of mine asked me why I would want to participate in a mudrun. At first it was a personal challenge and then it was because Cassie McCreary peer pressured me and now its because of the organization that the run benefits. The proceeds from this event go to an organization called Helping Heroes Kids...

Too Hot for School?
Posted Tuesday, August 28, at 9:23 AM

I think when my kids get home EARLY from school today, I'll have them mow the lawn. They'll be outside anyway. That's the first place they go when there's an early out for heat. And really it doesn't affect me much either way since my job is at home but for parents that work, it must be a huge inconvenience...

We apply labels to ourselves and others apply labels to us as well. I label myself a conservative and I am a Catholic. I am also a gymrat and a runner. However, I am not always those things 100% all the time. There are attributes of all those that I am and others I question...

We love breakfast at our house. We were two teenagers short this past Sunday so drove to the Lakes to try the breakfast buffet at one of our favorite steak joints, Table 316. They should stick to what they do best, lunch & dinner. I have never had a bad prime rib, steak or chicken there but the breakfast buffet was bad, pretty bad. Sorry guys...

Do trailer park owners have to abide by the same ordinances?
Posted Wednesday, May 9, at 9:54 AM

I understand the necessity of community ordinances that encourage residents to keep their property neat and tidy so I will keep my grass under 8 inches and I will offer to mow the yard of the vacant house next door. I will even cut my trees to the proper height. ...

Okoboji, a family destination?!
Posted Tuesday, April 24, at 11:10 AM

There's a strip club down the street from the middle school. There's a "Gentleman's Club" (which no true gentleman would be caught dead in) on the main highway as you drive into Okoboji. And now, someone named "Joe" is advertising for help for a new business called Fantasy Cleaning where scantily clad women will clean your boat, car etc for money. ...

My name is Leah Cauthron. I was born and raised on a farm near Cushing, Iowa. My parents still live there. I am a conservative Catholic. I have been married to Randy for 22 years and we have six children. I received my degree in Criminal Justice from Eastern Wyoming College and as a mother of six and a daycare mom, I have used probable cause, reasonable doubt, search and seizure, Miranda rights, submission, arrest and interrogation technique as a part of my daily life. I can also shoot a .357 magnum with deadly accuracy. I have lots of opinions on lots of things. I am not an expert on anything but I read a lot and will gladly share that information if I find it accurate. I have a sarcastic nature and for the most part I have pretty thick skin and most things don't bother me for long. I don't like mudslinging or name calling so keep negativity of the personal nature to yourself. Enjoy and welcome to my opinion.
