Love of Reading is Alive and Well in Spencer!Posted Wednesday, June 20, 2012, at 4:37 PM
In just the first three weeks, we have registered 728 participants, infants through adults, for the program. That's nearly 250 more than we had over the entire 2011 summer. What are we doing differently? Offering a little something for everyone. In the past, the Summer Reading Program was held specifically for school-aged children and teenagers. However, the thought of including adults in summer reading has been lingering in the backs of our minds for quite awhile. This year, we decided to jump forward and give it a try. We were hesitant at first, only putting together an optimistic fifty packets for adults. Two supply orders later, we're still running out of packets and have over 220 adults signed up for Summer Reading! How awesome is that!? Another brilliant addition is the "Little Stars Reading Club" for infants and toddlers under three years old. Combined with our new Baby/Toddler Storytime on Monday evenings, the "Little Stars" parent participants are instilling one of the greatest habits one can in a child, a lifelong love of books and reading. Just imagine the worlds they are opening up in our youngest patrons! We don't want to admit that we're surprised so many people are reading. We see readers every day in the library. However, it's nice to see some new and old faces coming in as well. It is especially heartwarming to see parents and grandparents signing themselves up and making that commitment to set good reading examples for the children. (I suppose the awesome prizes aren't deterring them either) So, surprised?...yes, but pleasantly, Happily, ECSTATICALLY surprised! The program runs until August 3rd, and anyone can register at anytime. There are weekly programs for infants, children, and teens, weekly prize giveaways for adults, and fantastic grand prizes to look forward to at the end. Stop in, call, email, or visit the library's website for more information. |
