Rock And Roll In General And Bruce Springsteen In Particular

Posted Thursday, November 15, 2012, at 10:02 PM

I just finished the book "Bruce Springsteen And The Promise of Rock 'N' Roll" by Marc Dolan. It was on display at the Spencer Library and I thought I would read it since I have been a fan of "The Boss" since I first saw him in concert at Hancher Auditorium in Iowa City on June 13, 1978.

As the youngest of six, I grew up listening to a variety of music, from Sinatra and Bennett to Dave Mason and Jethro Tull. I was in 8th grade when I saw my first live concert with my family in Des Moines. We had third row seats to see Peter, Paul, and Mary. Two years later I got to see Elvis perform at the Hilton Coliseum in Ames.

In 10th grade I remember driving to Sioux City's Auditorium with some friends to see Sha Na Na perform. A couple years ago I took our 12 year old son to the same venue (now called the Tyson Center) for a Lynyrd Skynyrd concert (Yes, they ended with "Free Bird"). It was a great bonding experience and he liked them better than the Jackson Browne concert a year or two later at Sioux City's Orpheum Theatre.

Springsteen was the best. In 1978 he played songs from his "Born To Run" and "Darkness On The Edge Of Town" albums together with Clarence Clemons and the rest of the E Street Band. I saw him again on October 30, 1992, at Hilton Coliseum (twenty years after seeing Elvis there). He performed songs from his albums "Lucky Town" and "Human Touch". Flash forward another 20 years and he is now on tour performing hits from his album "Wrecking Ball" (an album I bought from Itunes as a digital download which I access on the "ICloud"). Springsteen remains the best. He has spanned forty years (or from vinyl to cassette to compact disk to the "cloud"). If you get a chance to catch Springsteen in concert, do not pass it up. He does not disappoint.

Wow you really took me back in time JP. I was at that same concert at Hancher in 1978. Not only was Bruce at the top of his game, but we actually ran into him and the rest of the band minus Clarence after that concert at Perkins in Iowa city. We were talking out side when the automatic sprinklers came on spraying Bruce. I can still remember it as if it was yesterday.

Roberto, I have to confess that I had center seats, first level and was way in the back, and that after Bruce and the band were finished with their SECOND encore, my friend and I figured they were done and we left.

We got as far as the Iowa River when we heard them start playing again, so we went back and NOBODY was in his seat--everyone was cramming as close to the stage as he could get and Bruce was singing old rock and roll tunes. I bet it went on for four hours.
