As I saw George Lindsey's obituary in today's paper my memory took me back to 1983 (give or take a year). A couple schoolmates from college and law school joined me in a pilgrimage to Iowa City.

While there we paid tribute to our old haunts--- most of which were bars-- such as "The Airliner", "The Fieldhouse", and "The Sanctuary".

Our trip down memory lane ended (coincidentally) about closing time. It was then time for a breakfast visit to the "Skell Diner" a/k/a "The Skelly Truck Stop". Located at the southeast corner of the Coralville exit on Interstate 80, the Skell Diner was the perfect after hours breakfast blast. My favorite fare was "The Big 10-4" (eggs, toast, hashbrowns, bacon and coffee).

My friend Jim is the funniest man alive (certainly the funniest man who is also a dentist in North Dakota). Anyway, Jim found this trucker's ball cap that had been left in our booth. The bill of the cap bore a handwritten note (something on the order of "Keep on truckin'") and was signed "George Lindsey".

We all recognized the name and immediately and in unison exclaimed "Goober!" (George Lindey's most popular acting role was that of "Goober" the gas station attendant on "The Andy Griffith Show"). Then the immitations began, such as Goober's own imitation of Cary Grant ("Judy, Judy, Judy"). We were soon laughing so hard we were crying and the other patrons of the Skell Diner were cracking up as well.

George Lindsey lasted a lot longer than the diner. Both are missed by many. RIP
