Last Friday afternoon I stopped by the Clay County Events Center to pay tribute to Bob Rose and to thank him for his service to the community. The advertising catch-phrase used by Mid-America Energy is appropriate to describe Bob Rose's relationship with the City of Spencer. For as long as I can remember, Bob has been obsessively, relentlessly, at our service.
As a student-athlete at Spencer High School thirty years ago, I came to know Bob on the sidelines. He worked every home football game on the "chain-gang", announced all the basketball games, and was a timer or starter at all the track meets.
If you "google" "Bob Rose, Spencer, Iowa" you will get a glimpse of his volunteerism. Rotary, Northwest Amatuer Golf Tournament, Spencer Family YMCA, Spencer Mainstreet, Northwest Aging Association, and on and on. Bob's contributions are matched only by those of his lovely wife, Kayleen.
I was under-dressed at the reception, having switched from a suit to a long-sleeve t-shirt to kick-off the weekend. I apologized for my attire but later realized that the "Thunder Bridge Road Race" t-shirt I wore was, indeed, appropriate, because Bob and his departed friend Paul Williams organized that event and ran it for many years. Thank you, Bob Rose!
