Some Folks Don't Know JackPosted Thursday, June 23, 2011, at 10:19 PM
Earlier this spring there was a story about a high school boy being banned from the prom because he had taped cardboard letters on the outside of the school which spelled-out a prom invitation to his intended date. The story within the story was that the high school over-reacted by banning the romantic lad from the dance. Only after a tremendous out-pouring of support (including a protest "sit-in" and a facebook group) and television appearances by the boy on a few national shows, did the school relent. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/05/14...
A couple days ago there was a similar story reported by the UPI:
BANGOR, Pa., June 22 (UPI) -- A Pennsylvania graduate slipped a senior prank into the ceremony by having himself recognized for winning the "Jack S. Hitte Award for Academic Excellence."
Ethan Rosenberry, 18, said he put the name of the fake award -- designed to resemble the profane term for "nothing" -- on his form for the Bangor Area High School graduation program after not being awarded any scholarships and the phrase was read aloud during Thursday's ceremony, The Express-Times, Harrisburg, Pa., reported Wednesday. http://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2011/06/22/P...
Apparently the phony award made it past the proof readers in the guidance counselor's office (or perhaps the guidance counselors simply didn't know Jack). Anyway, that story ended well because the principal in that case displayed a sense of tolerance (and a sense of humor). The graduate is quoted as having said "If Mr. Vlasaty wasn't such a great guy, there could have been huge problems."
Mr. Vlasaty probably saw an episode or two of "The Simpsons" (a cartoon show where prankster Bart Simpson regularly makes a crank call---like to the bar where he asks them to "Page my father... Mr. Coholic.....his first name is Al").
I am not advocating crank calls. My point is that it seems to me that folks tend to over-react more these days and tend to be overly strict in applying rules. A good prank is still a good prank. Is your refrigerator running? (Better run and catch it!) Remember...."all work and no play make Jack a dull boy". Or do you know Jack?
