I'm A Gangster?

Posted Thursday, October 11, 2012, at 4:10 PM

Teaching my granddaughter, Kennidi, to be a gangster. We have a long way to go:-)
I've been a fan of Kelly Ripa since she played a troubled kid on the soap opera, All My Children. I continued to watch as she and Regis Philbin co-hosted their talk show, was on her own, and now co-hosts Live With Kelly and Michael. I have enjoyed her bubbly personality, but yesterday, amongst the ''uh's'' came something I thought she was schooled enough not to say. ''But the gangster's dog is uh, I mean if it's a gangster it would have to be a dangerous, uh, pit bull kind of dog, right?"

You can imagine the owners of ''pit bull kind of dogs'' are more than irritated by this comment. Man kind has so many preconceived ideas of practically everything. People with red hair are ''hot heads'', people that ride motorcycles are a rough and tumble kind of folk, and people that own a pit bull are gangsters. Now some of these preconceived ideas may be accurate, but not in every instance.

My father has red hair and not once have I ever seen him angry beyond belief. I ride a motorcycle as do many of my friends. There isn't a mean person in the group. I don't officially own a pit bull, but I do have them living with me and care for them. I'm not a gangster, a thug, or a home boy. (whatever those are). I know many people that do own pit bulls. They have various professions, incomes, lifestyles, and family dynamics. How dare we lump everyone together because at one time someone acted this way or did something wrong and happened to own a pit bull.

Many shelters and rescues go above and beyond the call of duty when adopting out a bully breed. SEPR is very open and honest about the possibility of the dog having strong prey drive or possible animal aggression. We educate our families and provide support for them as long as they have the dog. We work very hard at making sure our dogs are adopted to families that will care for the dog and be responsible pit bull owners. Our goal is not to see how many we can place, but to make sure they are a good fit.

So Kelly, would that mean that people owning a Chihuahua are all Paris Hilton types? You know, blonde, skinny, rich, spoiled? Kind of like you Kelly.

I think I'm going to dress up in my ''biker'' apparel, grab my viscous pit bulls, hop on my motorcycle, get the dogs spike collars, and send Kelly a photo. Won't she be surprised when she finds out I'm the same size and age as she is, am a grandma, and pull up my pantyhose the same way she does!

I'm just as guilty as the next about forming opinions without all of the facts, but I've learned to keep my mouth shut with my comments until I know the facts.

My name is Stephanie O'Brien. I'm an animal lover and enjoy volunteering. I have combined those passions into providing a temporary home to animals that would otherwise be sitting in a shelter or worse, euthanized due to lack of room in a shelter. For the past two years I've fostered pit bull type dogs for a rescue in South Dakota. I've also had the opportunity to do some presentations on responsible pet ownership and have been involved in fighting breed specific legislation in SD and IA. I'm looking forward to providing the readers with animal related topics and possibly answer any questions you may have. Enjoy! Stephanie Sioux Empire Pit Rescue Volunteer
