Clean Up in Aisle 9!Posted Saturday, August 25, 2012, at 11:19 AM
Boomer, Delta, and Ike crossing the bridge on our daily walk. Trying to maneuver 3 dogs on a walk while holding bags, pepper spray, treats and a phone is a recipe for disaster. I snagged a ''fanny pack'' at White Drug for 50 cents during Crazy Days. Keeps my hands free for juggling leashes.
As with any other public area, those of us that use it need to make sure we keep it clean. Yep, you guessed it. Pick up the poop! A simple concept really, just make sure you're prepared with the necessary supplies. Personally, I take the plastic grocery bags with me. I've tried tying them to the dogs leash, holding in my hand, putting them in my pocket, but the best solution I've found is the good old ugly ''fanny pack''. I have my bags, my phone, my pepper spray, and occasionally some doggy treats stuffed in there. Clean up is simple, put your hand in the bag similar to putting on a glove, pick up the poop, and pull the bag off of your hand, tying the handles together to secure the package. Note: Check to make sure there are no holes in the bag first:-) Some areas along the trail do not have garbage cans for you to deposit the package, so you may be left ''holding the bag'' for a ways. Please be respectful and clean up after your dog. Comments Showing comments in chronological order [Show most recent comments first] |

I have combined those passions into providing a temporary home to animals that would otherwise be sitting in a shelter or worse, euthanized due to lack of room in a shelter.
For the past two years I've fostered pit bull type dogs for a rescue in South Dakota. I've also had the opportunity to do some presentations on responsible pet ownership and have been involved in fighting breed specific legislation in SD and IA.
I'm looking forward to providing the readers with animal related topics and possibly answer any questions you may have. Enjoy!

Steph, love your blog. I have a question: why the pepper spray?
Thanks JTennant! The pepper spray is to keep dogs that are off leash from charging/attacking my dogs or me. I've sprayed it a couple of times towards dogs barrelling at us. The spray has never come in contact with the dogs, but they can smell it and usually stops them in their tracks. Dogs off leash is an entire other blog, but that's the short of it.
Where you get the pepper spray?
MB
Maribeth, I got mine at our local gun shop. I've had others tell me they've picked up some at Scheels.
