There's nothing like the past to introduce the future. Such as it is in Spencer, Iowa. Many changes have occurred since my first move to Spencer in 1979. The renovation of the former Best Auto property ignites the memory of the previous A & W Drive-In location near that area. Remember the food trays that hung on the partially rolled up car windows? About that era would also be Gibson's located across the street to the north where Arnold Motor (south grand) is now. The memories are fresh in my mind. Thus, more come alive. The Gambles Store located at 18 West 4th Street was there in 1981. I can even recall the delicious taste of flounder at Thurstons in 1976 for my sister's wedding rehearsal dinner.
There are, however, some memories that desire more definite recollections. Like the North Y Café with juke boxes inside. I believe there were gas pumps to the front and north of the café. I don't recall what brand of gas was sold there. Do any of my readers remember? Other businesses on the north end of town were: The Wonder Bread Store, Case Implement, Town and Country Drive-In and Shoppers Supply. Who could forget the Drive-In Theatre just north of KICD? I remember going there with my parents and sister in the mid 1960's. In the winter, I recall with a smile the lighted Santa and his sleigh on top of the KICD building. Do any of my readers recall what other former businesses were located on the north end of Spencer? Feel free to share your memories.
