We have the power, capability, mind and resources. Whether we desire to or not is up to us. Living in our comfortable homes and pleasant surroundings, it's hard to imagine anything less. It's really what we're familiar with.
May I encourage you to step out of your comfort zone ? This won't be too uneasy and you may even like it. I challenge you to make a positive difference in the life of a child, whether it be in Spencer, Iowa, outside the United States or both. Kids are everywhere: families, neighbors, Sunday School, church, school and society. You may or may not know them and the atmosphere they live in. Many organizations allow you to mentor children, sponsor them and have a positive impact on their lives. The cost is little compared to the need and personal reward.
Hazel is my 13 year old sponsored child from the Philippines. My monthly contribution supplies her with basic necessities like clothes, dinner plates , pans to cook with, shoes and medical care, to name a few. Her home is constructed of wood walls and a metal roof. The flooring is concrete, not carpet. Her bed is a mat laid on the concrete floor--not a soft , comfortable mattress. It's quite different from my house and even yours. While the basic necessities are essential, it's not as important as a child's self worth. She is grateful for my encouraging words which costs me nothing. She's ecstatic , just as much as another child, to receive support from people who care. I know this through her letters. Support helps to develop any child's self confidence. When they have a good amount of confidence, they can do anything. Without confidence, they cannot develop to their full potential.
An encouraging word, an act of kindness and emotional support is something everyone needs. When you give, it comes back. And so my faithful readers, I challenge you to be a blessing to a child. Any child you see! Flash your awesome smile, shower your gentle encouragement, provide your strong support, extend your reassuring hug and/or caring written words. Even telling a child you're proud of them will swell with delight inside him/her. Go ahead! You'll be blessed beyond belief.
