Date location no-nos?Posted Tuesday, August 9, 2011, at 12:30 PM
I'll admit up front I'm no dating expert. Every now and again, I read up on "dating" advice, partly because I could probably use some and partly because such "advice" can be quite comical at times. After talking to some female coworkers, I think this is an example.
The article is a list of places women "are never interested in visiting."
Its stereotypes are laughable. The No. 1 nondestination is any kind of sports-themed places. This is assuming that women don't like sports, or at least don't like competing with a sports activity for their man's attention. But, plenty of women do like sports and would be thrilled to go to an event or maybe even a sports bar. One coworker said a baseball game may be a bad choice because of to much down time that could result in awkward silences on early dates. But, if you're more into having a conversation while leisurely enjoying a sport, baseball seems like a good choice.
The next location, a theme park, was not completely banned, but should be considered on a case-by-case basis. I agree with this one. The last thing I want is for my date to be dealing with my disregard for dizziness after she talks me into joining her on one of the rides I normally wouldn't ride. I'm getting nauseous just thinking about it.
Next on the list, chain restaurants are simply difficult to avoid in many situations. Yes, we don't have a lot of them around here. But, if you're together long enough, you'll likely go to a restaurant that exists in other cities. Even Sioux Falls, which has the most restaurants per capita, has plenty of chain restaurants. The more originality the better, especially for unique first dates, but avoiding chain restaurants altogether just doesn't seem reasonable.
I agree that gross-out comedy movies may not be the best for dates, but this should be considered on a case-by-case basis. For example, women accompanied me to both Hangover movies and enjoyed them for the most part.
Paintball would probably be off limits for a lot of dates, but some women are definitely adventurous and would love to take a shot at their man. Now that I think about it that way, men may want to avoid this option for safety reasons.
Finally, the article discourages men from having their dates meet their mothers. Obviously, women don't want to feel like they're competing with mothers all the time, but they do need to meet. If all goes well, they may just be in-laws some day and wouldn't you rather know what you're getting yourself into up front?
So, that's my take on these so-called date location no-nos.
Men, have you gone on dates to these locations? How did it turn out? Do you have advice on the topic?
Women, what do you think? Can you speak from experience for or against any of these locations?
As always, I'd love to hear your feedback!
