What happened to Phantom?Posted Thursday, April 28, 2011, at 7:19 PM
Over the past few months, Phantom the dog has come up in conversations. For those who may be unfamiliar with Phantom, she was a German shepherd who lived on her own south of Spencer for about a year. She was rescued from that situation, adopted and became a type of icon for adopted pets.
I am sad to say Phantom is no longer with us.
Four different people have shared this with me.
Lee Youde, Phantom's owner, and I had an interview scheduled to talk about Phantom, but it fell through.
I understand if he doesn't want to talk about it. Phantom had clearly become part of his family.
At the same time, Phantom had become a public figure and people were interested in what she was up to and how she was helping to spread the word about responsible pet ownership and adoption.
Phantom the Dog's Facebook page is still a sounding board for that effort and features a lot of helpful information about local pet-related events as well as articles about pets.
I am glad to see Phantom's legacy continue and I hope others will get behind the effort to eliminate animal cruelty and abandonment, while supporting the adoption of pets like Phantom everywhere.
