More legislators need to pledge to 'Never Gonna Give You Up'Posted Saturday, April 9, 2011, at 11:52 AM
Oregon legislators have pledged to "Never Gonna Give You Up." Hopefully, the rest of the nation's political leaders will follow their lead.
Chance are you know the next line is, "Never gonna give you up."
It's a classic one-hit wonder (Is that allowed?) and one legislator took it upon himself to get the lyrics worked onto the floor of the Oregon House.
Jefferson Smith wanted to lighten the mood as a freshman representative.
He and his wife decided, "Why not 'Rick Roll' the House?"
For those who may not know -- I didn't know before I saw this video -- 'Rick Rolling' is when an otherwise "normal" youtube video is interrupted by Rick Astley's infamous "Never Gonna Give You Up."
So, Smith went to work convincing some of his coworkers to work lines from Astley's tune into their regular speeches. He took on the daunting task of weaving in the phrases "never gonna say good bye" and "hurt you."
The finished result took more than a year to compile.
In my opinion, it was definitely worth the time and effort.
Decide for yourself by viewing the video here.
With some of the shenanigans happening at both the state and federal level, maybe an action like this would lighten the mood a bit and our representatives would be able to complete the tasks they were voted in to do. (You know, basic requirements such as balancing the budget, paying bills and avoiding a government shutdown.)
Maybe new Reps. Jeff Smith or John Wittneben can take Jefferson Smith's lead (He practically has the same name as you, Jeff. Maybe that's a sign?)
In Congress, I don't know if Steve King could pull this off or not. I've honestly never seen him laugh. (Even when Steven Colbert had me rolling on the floor and aching with laughter, the camera panned over to a stoic King).
Perhaps that history would make a moment like that even more memorable.
