Music Videos: Then and NowPosted Thursday, June 10, 2010, at 7:24 AM
Last night the CMT awards were on. It got me thinking of when I was a teenager and how I was so excited to turn on MTV and watch Total Request Live to see how my favorite videos were doing in their countdown. It reminded me of watching Pop Up Video on VH1 even if the videos weren't always new ones. I still to this day occasionally watch CMT for videos and will tune in to a rerun of Pop Up Video. But looking back on these memories and fast forwarding to today..what happened to MTV and VH1? Where are the music videos? All you see now are reality shows. I wish they would go back to their roots and show videos during the daytime like they used to.

My name is Heather and I've lived in Northwest Iowa most of my life. I have 2 sisters of which I am the middle child. I am a proud aunt to a niece and nephew who I love and adore. I went to South Clay until I finished 6th grade. I then went to Laurens-Marathon where I graduated in 2001. From there I attended NIACC in Mason City where I recieved a college degree in 2003. I started working when I was 16 at K-Mart in Spencer. I have also worked at Wal-Mart in Spencer and at Northwest Communications in Havelock. I am one of those unlucky ones that is currently unemployed. I am also recently divorced. With the loss of a job and the end of a marriage, I am back in the home where I grew up.

MTV is so trashy right now! I will be putting a lock on it so my kids can't watch it at all. Their newest debacle is solely about a nerdy kid and his well-endowed private area. Seriously, what has happened to our moral society and media in general?
I so remember videos from Michael Jackson (when he was really good), Cyndi Lauper, Billy Idol, all those hair bands, etc. from the 80s. It wasn't all G rated or anything but it was mostly good clean fun and gave us a common frame of reference for conversations with other kids at school that transcended cliques and labels.
Why can't they return to their music video roots? Surely with today's technology, the musicians could put out some amazing videos and there are enough bands out there today that there could be a great variety.
The show about the well endowed nerdy kid reminds me of why we do not have TV at our house. Sheesh!
Meh, I like MTV but I wouldn't let my kids watch it. What does that say about me? :)
MTV is horrific. I don't know why it's popular. I want to punch every person that's on it. Reality TV is a joke. It's scripted, corny, and it has nothing to do with real life.
Musicians still promote songs with music videos. It's just a shame that you have to watch them on their websites or YouTube instead of channels with names like Music Television and Video Hits One.
