Saying Farewell...Posted Monday, March 1, 2010, at 8:59 PM
So as most everyone knows South Clay Community School in Gillett Grove will be closing their doors at the end of the school year. South Clay is where I started my education. I can understand why it's closing, but it's still sad. When I started in preschool we had 20+ kids. When I graduated in 6th grade, I was one of 10 kids.
I honestly believe that my life would be different somehow if I was able to attend preschool through 12th grade at South Clay. Transferring to Laurens-Marathon in 7th grade was hard. Being the new kid is always hard, but I wasn't athletic or the smartest in the class. Now I'm not saying that I did not recieve an excellent education at L-M, but it wasn't the same as South Clay. It probably has a lot to do with the fact that the class sizes were smaller. I would like to thank Mrs. Gross (preschool & kindergarten), Mrs. Klump (1st grade), Mrs. Lehman (2nd grade), Mrs. Salton (3rd grade), Mrs. Rusk (4th grade), Mrs. Carlson (5th grade), and Mrs. Clark (6th grade) for being wonderful teachers! I have to say it's really nice that my South Clay teachers still remember me, and I'm even facebook friends with a couple of them! I will always look back on my elementary years with joy. My name is Heather and I've lived in Northwest Iowa most of my life. I have 2 sisters of which I am the middle child. I am a proud aunt to a niece and nephew who I love and adore. I went to South Clay until I finished 6th grade. I then went to Laurens-Marathon where I graduated in 2001. From there I attended NIACC in Mason City where I recieved a college degree in 2003. I started working when I was 16 at K-Mart in Spencer. I have also worked at Wal-Mart in Spencer and at Northwest Communications in Havelock. I am one of those unlucky ones that is currently unemployed. I am also recently divorced. With the loss of a job and the end of a marriage, I am back in the home where I grew up.

As the landscape of Iowa -- especially northwest Iowa -- continues to change, I think more and more of us will experience what South Clay alumni are experiencing. I personally went to a private school where my graduating eighth-grade class had a record-high 14 students, so I can relate to the small school setting. I too had to transfer to a "larger" school, though tiny compared to the schools my former classmates chose. There is always a lot of adjustment involved in those situations. As for the bigger picture, I think Iowans will be forced to continually adjust as we see more schools consolidate and close.
