Justice for all
Posted Wednesday, February 24, at 9:57 AM
Thirteen years ago, I interned at the local radio station, KICD AM/FM in the news department. I was determined to pursue a career in some form of journalism and was ecstatic that the news director, Curtis Dean, and general manager, John Wirkler, agreed that I could learn and work for the station at the same time.

As is the case with any major event in life, the same can be said of news stories - there are just some events that stick with you no matter what. Events and feelings that you can never shake from responding to the scene, seeing everything first hand and talking with witnesses after the fact.

For me personally, two cases will always stand out -- cases that no matter how hard I try, I just can't shake -- the Shelby Duis murder trial and responding to the scene and concurrent stories thereafter of Sky Erickson's murder.

They say that as a first responder or someone involved in spot news journalism, that you become hardened to the world after seeing and hearing all that you have. After sitting through press conferences and court room trials for these two tragedies, I can definitely say that it will change a person.

Never again, after sitting through the arguments and watching photos and videos of the Duis murder trial will I ever look at an accused child killer the same -- innocent or guilty. I will never be able to listen to the defense's arguments without thinking of what was said about that little girl. Now as a mother, I will never be able to think of any child that has been abused without remembering the pictures of that little girl's lifeless body.

I remember that details of the Erickson murder trial came in quickly when they were finally released by local and federal agencies, and that KICD soon became the hub of all Midwestern regional media wanting to get information on the story. The specifics that came in were horrifying -- to any grown adult and to me, still in my teens at the time. I won't divulge the explicit details because they have been hashed through over and over in the media in recent months, but to say that they did -- and continue to -- make me sick is an understatement.

To hear that charges against those that allegedly committed these crimes had been dismissed was disgusting and frustrating. I can only hope for the sake of Erickson's family members that justice is done at some point and time.

My heart goes out to the family members, as well as to the officers and first responders who have to live with the memories of what they saw in these terrible tragedies. Just hearing about new details and trials stirs up all of the emotions all over again.

To say that these experiences change a person is an understatement, and we can only hope that justice in the very end is done.

Baseball's black eye
Posted Wednesday, January 13, at 10:22 AM

Mark McGwire finally came clean and announced that years of speculation were correct -- he used steroids. I've never been a fan of McGwire's and like anyone else following baseball don't find his announcement to be all that newsworthy. Baseball fans and even the general public have known it for years, evidently it just took him a few extra years to come to grips with the truth...

Pregnancy annoyances
Posted Friday, January 1, at 8:26 PM

I have two beautiful little girls that are smart, adorable and for the most part well-behaved. Then again, I know I'm biased. My husband and I are expecting a little boy in just a few short months as well. While I have been through the whole pregnancy to-do twice before, I have to admit that I enjoy many aspects of it. Heartburn and sleep deprivation however, are not on that list...

Being a parent
Posted Tuesday, December 8, at 5:36 PM

I have come to realize that as a parent, you say the most ridiculous things and actually mean them. Examples from today alone: "Do not lick the window to clean it!" "Do not use your toothbrush to clean the dog's teeth!" "Chocolate donut frosting will not make your hair turn chocolate!"...

Fighting the Good Fight
Posted Friday, November 6, at 9:40 AM

I was one of those people last spring. You know, the kind that roll their eyes and say that H1N1 is just another virus. Who really cares? And then my kids got sick. Seven straight days of extremely high fevers, sore throats, dehydration, whining, crying, secondary infections and enough antibiotics to make an insurance company cringe...

Fall on the farm
Posted Monday, October 12, at 2:39 PM

I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the number of things that I love about the fall season. The changing of the fall colors; the chilly fall air; apple and pumpkin harvesting -- my list goes on and on. However, my husband and I recently moved our growing family out to his family farm in rural Iowa. ...

Iowa born and bred, I grew up in Spencer and became a career media woman working both in radio and newspaper. I am now the coordinator/media specialist for a division of Homeland Security that provides training to first responders throughout the State of Iowa. My husband, Paul, and I have two young children -- soon to be three -- and recently purchased the Bloomquist family farm which his great-grandfather built upon his arrival from Sweden in the early 1900s.
