A life worth living?

Posted Wednesday, January 27, 2010, at 3:56 PM

I read a story today about the "secrets to a longer life."

To pretty much sum it up, scientists found a couple places in the world where people are living longer lives.

Reasoning behind this longevity:

1.) Low Meat, Plant-based diet

2.) Ritual of "downshifting" every night

3.) They do everything themselves from walking to the store to making their own bread. Some get up and down off the floor several dozen times a day.

4.) Strong motivational families (for the aging)

-live near their children

-they aren't recipients of care, they're contributors to the lives of their families

5.) Active lifestyles

What I'm understanding is not only are these people living healthy lives. They're living happy, full lives. They don't put their aging parents in a nursing home. They keep them active and happy till the end. Maybe we could all learn something here. Maybe it's happiness that's the cure. Maybe it's not about how long you live but how full your life is. Keep your family and friends close. If you're not happy, take a step back and see what YOU need to do to fix it. Take some time to slow down even if it's only 5 minutes. Don't worry about things that really, truly do not matter. You only have one life here in planet Earth. Might as well make it worth living.

My parents have died, my mother at 47 and my dad at 63, and thus will never get old. However, I couldn't imagine "coordinating their care" if they had. Rather, I'd want them to contribute to my family, in my home or their own, whatever the circumstances would dictate, by caring for children, helping to cook, just being there to run ideas by and help me retain some measure of sanity, to clean or maintain things, to teach us things and just to contribute. I like to think the same things of my in-laws, but I'm not that close to them. Ah well. Very good post.
